Mammary lobe

What it does. Contains the alveoli that produce milk during lactation.

Where it sits. Drains through a lactiferous duct that opens at the nipple; embedded in adipose tissue and supported by the suspensory ligaments.

  • Each breast holds 15 to 20 mammary lobes containing clusters of milk-secreting alveoli.
  • The NCERT chain, in order: alveoli → mammary tubules → mammary duct → mammary ampulla → lactiferous duct → nipple.
  • The first milk after birth, colostrum, carries antibodies that give the newborn its early immunity.

Chapter numbering moved when NCERT rationalised its books in 2023 and the NTA has revised the NEET syllabus since, so this maps by unit and title. It is a study aid, not a syllabus.
