Uterine cervix

The firm, narrow lower part of the uterus that projects into the vault of the vagina. Its canal runs between the internal os above and the external os below.

How to spot it. The narrow, firm lower part of the uterus projecting into the top of the vagina.

What it does. Its canal and mucus control what passes between the vagina and the uterine cavity, and it dilates in labour.

Where it sits. Joined above to the body of the uterus at the internal os and opening below into the vagina at the external os.
