  • 12 pairs, each joined behind to a thoracic vertebra. Pairs 1–7 are true or vertebrosternal, joined to the sternum by their own cartilage.
  • Pairs 8–10 are false or vertebrochondral, joined to the cartilage of the seventh rib; pairs 11 and 12 are floating or vertebral and reach the sternum not at all.
  • Each rib is bicephalic — it has two articular heads.

Chapter numbering moved when NCERT rationalised its books in 2023 and the NTA has revised the NEET syllabus since, so this maps by unit and title. It is a study aid, not a syllabus.
