How to spot it. A ringed tube in front of the oesophagus, running from the larynx down into the chest.

What it does. Conducts air to and from the lungs; its cartilage rings hold the airway open.

Where it sits. Divides at the carina into the left and right main bronchi.

  • Part of the conducting zone. It warms, moistens and filters the air and takes no part in gas exchange.
  • It divides at the level of the fifth thoracic vertebra into the right and left primary bronchi.
  • Incomplete C-shaped cartilage rings hold it open; the gap in each ring lies against the oesophagus behind.
  • The order to be able to write out: external nostrils → nasal chamber → pharynx → larynx → trachea → primary, secondary and tertiary bronchi → bronchioles → alveoli.

Chapter numbering moved when NCERT rationalised its books in 2023 and the NTA has revised the NEET syllabus since, so this maps by unit and title. It is a study aid, not a syllabus.
